Canino Endorsed Unanimously

TORRINGTON—The Torrington Republican Town Committee on Thursday night unanimously endorsed Joe Canino as the party’s candidate for state representative of the 65th Assembly District.

“It’s a true honor to have secured the endorsement from the Republican Town Committee, an organization whose membership is not only passionate about our city, but dedicated to the cause of improving the quality of life for everyone in Connecticut,” Canino said. “I’m looking forward to speaking to as many voters as possible this summer and fall to learn about their concerns and vision for our state.”

In his acceptance speech, Canino, a former three-sport athlete at Torrington High School, told committee members that making Connecticut more affordable for middle and working class families is among his priorities. Additionally, Canino said he takes seriously escalating concerns about crime and the legislature’s habit of foisting  new mandates on the city that create pressure on local property taxpayers.

Canino, 26, is a graduate of George Washington University, where he earned a degree in political science. While there, he developed a passion for public policy that led him to the legislative arena in Hartford. Possessing a keen understanding of issues faced by Torrington residents, Canino is a communications professional at the statehouse.

“Joe is a young emerging leader in Connecticut, and we’re thrilled that he’s taking on the challenge of unseating an incumbent legislator who is part of the leadership team in Hartford whose agenda is making life more difficult for residents here and throughout our state,” said Tom Scoville, Republican Town Committee chairman. “Joe will bring new energy and perspectives to the job, and give our city a louder voice against a Democratic majority at the capitol that cares less about affordability and fiscal responsibility than party ideology. He will be a great state representative.”

The meeting of Torrington Republicans was held at The Mill House Restaurant in Torrington.

While a THS student, Canino served as Wing Commander in the U.S. Air Force Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. He is a former youth group member at St. Paul’s Church and participated in fundraising for mission trips to disadvantaged parts of the world.

“Joe is a clear-eyed, determined individual with a deep appreciation for public service and the common sense values that run through Torrington,” Scoville said. “I look forward to seeing the good work he’ll do to benefit our city and Connecticut as our next state representative.”
