Canino Announces Candidacy for 65th District
TORRINGTON—Surrounded by friends and family, city native Joe Canino on Saturday announced his candidacy for state representative for residents of the 65th Assembly District.
“My decision to run and earn the responsibility of serving in the legislature is driven by the frustrations of residents who have been struggling with the growing cost of living in Connecticut and what they view as a lack of common sense in the progressive policies passed in Hartford,” said Canino, a former three-sport athlete at Torrington High School. “Residents say their state is changing, and not for the better. I think they’re right, and my aim is to bring a new leadership style and fresh perspectives to address their concerns and improve our quality of life.”
Canino, 26, is a graduate of George Washington University, where he earned a degree in political science. While there, he developed a passion for public policy that led him to the legislative arena in Hartford. Possessing a keen understanding of issues faced by Torrington residents, Canino works in communications at the General Assembly and already has a network of relationships that will allow him to be effective immediately.
“My focus is clear—promoting policy that prioritizes fiscal responsibility, affordability, economic development, and public safety,” Canino said. “Torrington residents want a state government that supports small businesses, takes seriously escalating concerns about crime, and limits new unfunded mandates on our city that create pressure on local property taxpayers.”
Canino will seek the official nomination from Torrington Republicans in mid-May and looks forward to speaking to residents throughout the summer and fall.
While a THS student, Canino served as Wing Commander in the U.S. Air Force Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. He is a former youth group member at St. Paul’s Church and participated in fundraising for mission trips to disadvantaged parts of the world.
